Card Catalog Styled Vanity

August 7, 2012 ·

A $15.00 Queen Anne’s vanity with little cubby hole drawers was the perfect piece to recreate into a card catalog style vanity/desk!

The vanity started out as an ink-stained, maple wood colored, boring mess.

The finish was created with 2 coats of CeCe Caldwell’s Maine Harbor Blue, some clear and dark wax to seal and age the drawer fronts, and Gold Rub and Buff on the edges to highlight the hardware and add some elegance to the piece.

I picked up a half yard of teal and blue fabric from Joann Fabric (with my 50% off coupon!) to recover the stained rose patterned fabric she came with.

The shining star of this vanity is the label holder pulls I ordered from Lillian Olive on Etsy.  They were a steal at $5.99/5 pulls with matching brads.  I went to Lowes and picked up some small screws so I could attach them to the vanity.  The pulls are made of heavy gauge metal and are available in bright brass, antique brass, and matte black.

Lillian Olive
I purchased the bright brass to stand out against the blue paint but I absolutely love the matte black pulls!

Inside where the vanity mirror was missing we cut, sanded, and painted a piece of backer board to create a chalkboard.  Since there are a ton of little drawers and cubbies on this vanity my intention was to turn it into functional craft storage but it could also still be used as a vanity!

Now this vanity has every right to be a little vain!

I was originally planning to do a bit of a darker blue but I wanted to try CeCe Caldwell's paint so I picked Main Harbor Blue and even though it is brighter than I was originally thinking it looks great with the gold trim and hardware!

That is a beautiful color! Do you call that periwinkle? The hardware gives it a nice touch too! Great job!

Thanks. It's called Maine Harbor Blue by CeCe Caldwell's chalk and clay paint. The color before being waxed looked like a periwinkle to me. It deepened up a bit once the wax was layered on top and is probably more a mix of a royal and periwinkle.

Thanks so much Tami! I was happy to find a fabric that had the perfect shade of blue in it. I forgot to take a paint swatch with me so I was just eyeballing it from memory! Worked out this time!

    August 9, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Thanks Connie! The gold was actually an afterthought! The vanity seemed like it needed something extra to play off the gold hardware and to contrast the blue. It was my first time using Rub and Buff (a metallic tinted wax). I'll definitely use it again!

    August 10, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Thanks Yvonne! I would use it for craft storage 😉 myself but I left the ring holder and jewelry cubbies in the top 2 drawers so if someone wanted it as a vanity it would still work as one! It was my first time using CeCe Caldwell's Maine Harbor Blue. I really like how the color turned out but the paint tends to have a marbled finish when waxed that I wasn't sure about until the entire piece was finished! Thanks for hosting. 🙂

They came in the vanity. the mirror was missing but the hardware was already there so we placed a chalkboard inside instead.
