Artist File

September 4, 2012 ·

I mentioned last week we were almost finished redoing the artists’ file cabinet we picked up for free a while back.

Here’s the before:

If it hadn’t been for the chunk of wood missing right up by the “Free” tag I would have left this piece as is.  But because we needed to fill in the missing chunk the cabinet also needed a paint job.  I wanted to leave the top and drawers wood tone because the spots, grain, texture, and age of the wood really appealed to me.

This is what the piece looks like now:

I’m not completely sure about how it turned out.  It isn’t bad,  I’m also not in love with it.

But it works great for toy storage!

We also put it on these great Waxman 2″ casters from Lowes which perfectly mimic the colors.

The colors also go well with the rest of the room.

But, this might not be it’s permanent home!  If your remember, I really want it down in the office.

So tell me what you think!  Should I leave the drawers as is or paint them black like the shell?  Maybe a new stain color (darker) or oxidize them to give them gray weathered look?

I'm in love with it, such a functional piece, and you sure can't beat FREE!! I'm with you on the finish, I like it fine as is, but I can also imagine it done differently–guess it mostly depends on where it is going to end up.

I think it looks great! When I saw it on MMS, I thought it was the opposite of the piece I painted and stained which was orange and dark stain. When I looked closer I realized you just painted the shell! I love it – what a cool find and FREE! YEAH!!!
