The Laurel Dollhouse

December 27, 2013 ·

Hello lovely readers!  I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
This year we decided that our daughter’s main gift would be a dollhouse.
One that would look pretty sitting out.
Not those big plastic things you buy at the store.
We have several of those and I can’t wait to get rid of them now that the new one has been gifted!
As a resident blogger for The DIY Club I decided to order a wood dollhouse kit from one of The DIY Club sponsors, Rockler.  I liked the size and design of The Laurel Dollhouse.  It’s the perfect size to fit on top of her dresser and has a cute wrap around porch.
For now we painted the entire dollhouse white.  Eventually it may get some accent colors and shingles.
Inside I used scrapbook paper and Mod Podge to wallpaper the walls.

The Laurel Dollhouse kit is a wood dollhouse kit which is put together like a puzzle.  All of the pieces are pre-cut and simply need to be popped out when you are ready to assemble.  We glued all of the joints with hot glue made specifically for wood.

There are written directions as well as pictorial schematics of what pieces are punched on each wood sheet. The only issue we ran into was with the window and door silkscreens.  They weren’t labeled and it took a bit of trial and error to figure out which ones went with each door/window.

As expected there are places where the pieces don’t fit together exactly flush and we plan to caulk the spaces where the walls meet the floor, etc.  A lot of hardcore dollhouse builders use tiny trims and moldings but I find that to be WAY too much for a child’s dollhouse so we feel a bead of caulk will suffice for making crisp joints!

Overall, I’m so happy with how it looks all put together and can’t wait to help her pick out some Calico Critters furniture to fill it out.  The couple of animals she has look so adorable in it!

Rockler is no longer carrying The Laurel Dollhouse but it can be bought online through Amazon.  It takes a bit of time to put together but I think it’s well worth it to get a handcrafted personalized wood dollhouse that you’ll want to keep out and display.

Disclosure: I received The Laurel Dollhouse Kit from Rockler as a resident blogger with The DIY Club.  The project and any opinions of the product are my own.

It is really cute! I love dollhouses and have a small one that my Hubby got at an auction..so fun to paint and decorate…she will love it for many years. Dollhouses can be ordered at Greenleaf.com, as well…they have a forum that shares wonderful ideas for fixing up dollhouses, too. Have loads of fun!
