Anchors Aweigh End Table

July 5, 2013 ·

Hope you had a happy fourth yesterday!!  We celebrated with crab cakes and lots of yummy picnic style food over at my sister’s.  Wednesday evening was our firework watching night.  We took the kids to our local fireman’s carnival and they had a blast riding the rides and then enjoyed the carnival’s firework display which we were able to watch close up from my in-laws back yard.  I wasn’t sure how my big four year old would do with the rides since she tends to get nervous but she rode all the rides including big kid ones like The Scrambler and Ferris Wheel and enjoyed every minute of it!  Little man is about to turn 2 and he had just as much fun on the rides he could ride too.  The fireworks were a bit of a different story.  Little man sat with mommy and watched the whole show but his big sister cried from the noise and watched the last 10 minutes from inside the kitchen window.  We’ll be taking them to Hershey Park next week and I hope they are just as thrilled there as they were with the  carnival rides.
Now onto another sea inspired furniture makeover.
It’s the companion piece to the nautical coffee table I shared on Wednesday.
With this piece I decided to keep the wood top (though a bit amended) and painted the base in Coastal Blue General Fishishes Milk Paint from Rockler sealed with wipe on poly.
The top had seen better days so we used Soygel to strip what was left of the existing finish.

Once the top was down to the bare wood I cut out an anchor shape from contact paper and adhered it to the center of the table top.

I wiped on my favorite go to stain, Minwax Express Color in Walnut.  To make the edges ever crisper I put some stain on an old paintbrush and painted it around the design.  I think it really helps to make it pop!  I plan to seal the top with a coat of clear wax but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

How pretty is that navy and wood!

Are you into the nautical trend as much as I am?  I think it can work with any decor during the summer time and I have had a lot of fun coming up with elements that will complement any style!

Disclosure: I received the General Finishes Milk Paint from Rockler as a resident blogger with the DIY Club.  The project and any opinions of the product are my own.

What in the world did you paste that anchor down with before using the stain? I'm here from 'better after'. Love this look but scared the stain will run under the paper part.

The stencil was cut out of contact paper so you just peel off the back layer and stick it on. If you rub the stain over the stencil going away from the edges then you shouldn't have any bleed under! The stain I use (Minwax Express Color) is more of a creme vs. liquid so it rubs over nicely!

Because of this table I am going to start a new chapter in my life. I absolutely love this table. The wood and blue color is my all time favorite look. Do you have any other nautical furnishings to view?
    Thanks for inspiring me.

This is my only specifically nautical piece though I did paint a coffee table in the same blue and used blue and white ticking to line the exposed (under glass drawer) drawer. I sold them together as a set. https://www.petalandply.com/2013/07/nautical-coffee-table-redo.html
