Eclectic Botanical Farmhouse Family Room Reveal |One Room Challenge™ Week 6

May 11, 2017 ·

We made it!!!

Six quick weeks have come and gone and our Eclectic Botanical Farmhouse Family Room is complete!

We owe a big thank you to Linda of Calling It Home for hosting the One Room Challenge™.  The ORC provided a wonderful community to encourage us throughout this project and hold us to our six-week timeline.

We are sooooo happy with our new space!

I know! Such a tease.

Hang tight. I promise there are TONS of after pics. Probably way more than necessary but we did just devote six weeks of our lives to bringing this room together, so…I gotta go big!

First, let’s jump back really quick and see where this  all started.

living-room-before-2

living-room-before-1

Literally, a hodge-podge mess of miss-matched furniture and accessories thrown in just to have somewhere to sit and places to store our stuff. A room full of unfinished/unstarted projects and plans for some day.

We crafted quite a lofty plan and I’ll let you decide if we succeeded!

Eclectic Botanical Farmhouse Family Room

  • install shiplap walls surrounding fireplace
  • install built-in shelving and bench seating surrounding fireplace
  • paint shiplap and built-ins
  • source plug-in wall sconces to flank fireplace
  • build console table for wall beside french doors
  • build farmhouse style bench to place behind the exposed section of sofa
  • build, install, & paint window cornices
  • swap out curtains
  • patch together 2, 4’x6′ rugs to place in front of french doors
  • paint sunroom and bathroom doors
  • refinish art file
  • paint tufted chair upholstery
  • refinish end tables
  • refinish or replace coffee table
  • replace too small rug
  • source matching accent chairs for in front of fireplace
  • add decorative wood trim to built-in entertainment cabinet
  • sew a few new pillow covers
  • “plant” silk fiddle leaf fig
  • pull together finishing touches (aka rearrange, buy, or DIY decor)

Ready for it!!!!

Here’s our completed Eclectic Botanical Farmhouse Family Room!

Our family room has an attached half bath which now fits with the rest of the space.

After painting the tufted chair (to hold off on having it reupholstered) I wasn’t completely thrilled with the color in this space. My mom gave me a vintage chenille blanket this week and I decided to use it as an impromptu boho slipcover!

Little known fact about me; I worked in high school and college as a florist. I had so much fun tapping into my old job skills and preparing the florals for this space.

Curtains too short? I wanted them to be the same length as the sheers so I added a 7″ lace panel.

What a transformation! I love the minty aqua color around the fireplace and how the softness translates all the way around the room. You have an amazing eye for decor and detail —and it shows here. Love your special touch with the flowers, too! It’s just an amazing space. Now, time to enjoy. Congrats! Thank you so much Susie! We have definitely been enjoying the space already. It is so nice to be able to sit down and relax and not look around and be distracted by all our projects and plans…because THEY.ARE.DONE!! Woohoo!

Wow, what a difference. Your pretty pastels are lovely, and I love the bottles along the fireplace. Great job.

    • Jessica says

      May 12, 2017 at 10:01 am

Thank you Dannyelle! Eventually I plan to put a mirror over the fireplace but for now it’s nice to be able to change it up seasonally. We had just the perfect amount of little flowers blooming in our garden to fill my brown bottles.

You can very much tell you we’re a florist- those flowers are arranged to perfection- so pretty! And so is the rest of the space – I especially love the shelves and the woven pouffe. And I love your styling on the fireplace with the bottles. Gorgeous!

    • Jessica says

      May 12, 2017 at 10:07 am

Thank you Lizzie! I really miss floral designing in a shop. I wish I had more opportunities to use that skill set. I am hoping to bring more floral projects to my blog in the future.

P.S. I found the woven trunk at Michaels!!! With a coupon it only ended up being $35 which I think is a great deal. It’s a nice size too. Not too big, not too small and fits quite a few of my 3-year-old’s toys.

Wow what a transformation. Nice to see bit of you preparing things to look pretty. Great job on floral arrangement, real or faux flowers? The colors you used are so soft and pleasant to enjoy the room. Sure is good sized room, lucky girl but you were so smart not to over furnish room.
Someday might think about painting fire place, maybe deeper shade of walls on either side? Maybe sponge paint rocks for varying degrees of color/shade.
Your family room is such a lovely room, enjoy being with your family in it.
    Happy Mothers day

    • Jessica says

      May 12, 2017 at 9:51 am

Thank you JaneEllen! The floral arrangement is made of real flowers (from Wegmans). The bottles are filled with real flowers and greens from our garden. The plum orchid and fiddle leaf fig tree are DIYs I made with silk stems from Michaels and Joanns.

I’ve mentioned to my husband about painting the stone on the fireplace. (I think) it would definitely be more my style painted but he won’t go for it.

Lovely transformation! The flowers are definitely the star of the show, and you did a beautiful job of arranging them.

Thank you so much Paula! I still can’t believe what a great selection of fresh flowers Wegmans had! The peach stock even smells as good as it looks.

Thank you Joanna! 🙂 It’s been a while since I’ve bought fresh flowers to make a real arrangement for myself. I want to do it more! It’s been years since I worked as a florist but floral arranging still has my heart and I hope to bring more of it to the blog.

This space looks gorgeous! Love all the furnishings your chose… and way to be resourceful with your chair cover. I would never have known it wasn’t meant to be that way from the start. Love what you did with the mantle (Pinned for inspiration). Beautiful job!

    • Jessica says

      May 12, 2017 at 9:18 am

Thanks Erin! I really liked the color I painted the tufted chair just not in this space. It looked out of place with the rest of the colors in the room so I had to do something quick! Thanks for pinning!

Love how this project turned out. Would love to see the turquoise wall as a navy wall instead. Nice open shelving, that’s my favorite part… okay maybe the rug is my favorite part.

    • Jessica says

      June 16, 2017 at 12:36 pm

Thank you Kristina! Navy is lovely but we wanted the space to stay a bit brighter. The room only gets natural light from the two windows in the morning so dark colors are tricky. I really love how the shelving came out too and the rug is definitely a winner in my book!

Love this room and LOVE THE TURQUOISE . I think navy would be too much of a contrast with your muted coastal colors and personally I find it is being over done. This room is timeless and I absolutely love what you did with this space !!!!!

Thank you so much Lesli! We are very happy with how the room turned out.
