Eclectic Farmhouse Foyer | One Room Challenge Reveal

November 10, 2016 ·

Today’s the big day!

The One Room Challenge has officially come to an end so it’s time to reveal our eclectic farmhouse foyer.

As a reminder, here’s where we started.

foyer-before

I know. yikes. what a mess. Our house was built around 1910 and when we purchased it the house needed a complete renovation. We lived with my parents for 6 months while my husband and family/friends completed all the projects necessary to move in and we have slowly been whittling away at the remaining projects since.

It feels so good to have another space checked off the to-do list!

Come on in to our new space.

The biggest impact in the space was achieved with paint!! The walls, trim, and railings all got fresh coats AND the floor was stenciled using the Toledo Tile Stencil from Royal Design Studio.

We also hung an oval mirror and installed a barnwood shelf as a little decor perch.

The new sisal runner really gives the entire stairwell a polished look.

Our stairwell really is a lightless tunnel. It is very narrow and there is zero light source. The fresh white paint certainly helped but the runner and patterned floor work wonders for drawing the eye down through the space.

And just for fun my littlest guy wanted to give a quick cheese for the camera while I was taking pictures of our new space. Silly little guy is still learning how to “cheese” and look at the camera correctly BUT he was too precious not to share. 🙂 That and the angle gives a great view of the wishbone brackets supporting the new shelf.

That stencil is everything. Well done!

      November 12, 2016 at 11:38 am

I was having a hard time choosing between several tile stencils but I am so happy with the one we went with!!! Exactly what I was envisioning!

oh jessica, it looks incredible! i love the painted floor so much!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:31 am

Thanks Cassie! That floor was about the death of me, but I love it so much too. Totally worth it!

Wow! That floor and runner…stunning! Definitely worth all the work you put into it. I also used those shelf brackets. Love them! Truly an amazing transformation!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:36 am

Thank you! Aren’t the wishbone brackets the best! I like that they’re super sturdy yet low-profile. I didn’t want anything detracting from the thick barnwood slab we used for our shelf.

I can’t believe that is a stenciled floor!! I really thought it was tile! It looks fantastic!

    • Jessica says

      November 21, 2016 at 5:32 pm

Thanks Natalie! It took a bit of trial and error and touch ups to get the stencil really crisp. Thankfully, I figured out what worked best for me and got it done in time.

It’s SO FUN and colorful!!! I LOVE it!!! Of course, I expect no less than awesome from you 🙂 🙂

You are too sweet Heather. Thank you! You had me swooning over the ceiling in your daughter’s room.

It’s so fresh and bright! I love the stencil so much! Do the kids love the metal wall and magnets? It turned out so great!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:32 am

The kids HAVE been having fun with the magnet wall! Bonus- the door is magnetic as well so they actually have 2 surfaces to cover. 😉

  7. Jillian says

    November 10, 2016 at 1:32 pm

I love the floor color and the runner is great too! Nice work.

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:28 am

Thank you Jillian! We ordered the runner online which was a gamble. I wasn’t sure how it would look especially against the floor color but I love it!!!

  8. Kari @prairiegirlhome says

    November 10, 2016 at 2:18 pm

Fantastic job! We both did a foyers with a farmhouse/cottage feel, and I am just loving how yours turned out! The sisal runner and that flooring is gorgeous!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:26 am

Thank you Kari. You did a fantastic job on your foyer too! I love the tile you chose. We originally wanted to lay tile but there isn’t enough clearance. We wouldn’t have been able to open our door!!

    November 10, 2016 at 4:59 pm

Looks beautiful. Great job. What a nice greeting for your fam.

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:23 am

Thanks Karen! Funny thing is we don’t use this as our entryway – we have a large mudroom entrance (also ugly and unfinished though…maybe we’ll tackle it next) BUT it is the only way to get upstairs to all the bedrooms and main bathroom. It was so depressing to have to walk through that unfinished UGLY space every day. SOOO glad it’s now finished. Makes me smile every time I pass through now.

  10. JaneEllen says

    November 10, 2016 at 7:13 pm

If you hadn’t said would have thought those were tiles on entry floor, incredible job.
Your little guy is just adorable, is he about 3 maybe? Makes me lonesome for my boys when they were so little and so darned cute. Now they’re both in 50’s.
You couldn’t have picked better color/stencil and runner for stairs, looks awesome.
Great wonderful job, shelf is also great.

Have wonderful Friday and weekend, enjoy new entryway.

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:14 am

Thank you JaneEllen! My little guy is 2.5 🙂 Good guess! Hope you are having a great weekend!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:19 am

Very thrilled! I hated having to walk through that space every day. So glad it is finished!

  12. Maggie @ Maggie Overby Studios says

Small space, big impact! Love the faux tile fix great job!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:18 am

Thanks! I was having a hard time picking from all of Royal Design Studios great stencil choices, but I really love the one we picked. Exactly what I was hoping for!

  13. Jessica says

    November 11, 2016 at 12:00 am

This is such a pretty space. I love the stenciled floor and the sheetmetal wall, so kid friendly.

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:16 am

Thanks Jessica. The kids were loving the magnet wall yesterday. Since the space is so small though I may have to impose a one-at-a-time rule to keep squabbles from breaking out. We did figure out we can actually expand the magnet play space since the door is metal and also magnetic!

So much better! Love the floors….they are incredible!

    • Jessica says

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:11 am

Thanks Ashley. The goal was to brighten the space but not make it too cold feeling.

  16. Amanda says

Absolutely beautiful! I love the stenciled floor!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:09 am

Thank you! I knew I wanted the floor to have an impact since it’s such a small space. I am in love with it. Here’s hoping the paint holds up well to foot traffic. 🙂

  17. Kristin @ Postbox Designs says

    November 11, 2016 at 12:59 pm

Your flooring is breathtaking! I have stenciled flooring before and it brings such a pop of color to a space. That tiny little shelf is so cute but I bet really functional in a space like this. A GREAT ORC…you should be proud!

    • Jessica says

      November 12, 2016 at 11:08 am

Thank you Kristin. The shelf is certainly nice because I can keep a few items in there without worrying about the kids bumping them.

  18. Crystal Fox @ The Weathered Fox says

Love, love, LOVE! The painted floor is incredible, but the job done to the steps, with the runner and the painted newel post, ahhh, so fresh! Your little guy, adorable!

    • Jessica says

      November 14, 2016 at 10:48 am

Thank you so much Cristina! I wasn’t sure how all the elements would end up working since it’s such a small space but I’m so happy with how everything came together.

    November 13, 2016 at 9:36 pm

Jessica, I love how your entry looks. The flooring is beautiful and it really makes your entry look like an entry. When I was looking for brackets to use in this challenge, I think I looked at the ones you have, but I needed 4 of them and that was more than I wanted to pay. Everything is fabulous!

    • Jessica says

      November 14, 2016 at 10:51 am

Thanks Carol. I really want to use these brackets in my kitchen too but I need 6 of them!! They are a bit on the pricier side so I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I’ll either have to keep saving or find something else.

  22. Jen @ Noting Grace says

    November 13, 2016 at 10:25 pm

Love this transformation. I would love to see this area with a new lighting fixture.

    • Jessica says

      April 11, 2017 at 11:46 pm

Thank you. I would love a new fixture for this space. The one we had planned on didn’t end up covering the existing hole. We also have the trouble of finding something that the door will clear when it swings in. Not as easy of a task as I had originally thought! :/
